Wild Dunes Family Photographer
With years of experience as a Wild Dunes family photographer, it is always special to photograph a family’s special vacation memories. The session with the Barnett family is no exception. Vacation family photos are a great way to preserve family memories and create new ones. A Wild Dunes family session provides a fun activity to participate in as a family, and you get keepsakes to last a lifetime.
For family sessions, I encourage clients to keep it simple. Don’t overthink it. Great photos start with good light and a beautiful backdrop. What elevates the photographs after that is the joy and playfulness a family brings to the portrait session.
Beach Vibes at Wild Dunes
Wild Dunes is a sprawling oceanfront resort spanning 1,600 acres on Isle of Palms, SC. This gated getaway is a private beach town away from the hustle and bustle of Charleston’s public beaches. With various shops, restaurants, and waterside adventures, Wilde Dunes is an idyllic family vacation location. Whether it’s renting bicycles to ride along paths or stroll along the beach at sunset, its balance of serene pastimes and fun activities is perfect for any family retreat. This tucked-away beach paradise is a perfect excuse to have a Wild Dunes family photographer pop over to snap some photos while vacationing at the resort.
Golden Hour
For family sessions, I always recommend photographing during golden hour. However, that time can be adjusted for sessions with little ones, especially during summer when bedtimes are soon after the sun sets. For earlier portrait times, I recommend starting the family photos at a location that has shade or a way to diffuse light.
A perfect example is the walking path to the beachfront. Often, lush, overgrown foliage precedes the boardwalk. This greenery helps soften the brighter, harsher light of an earlier time of day. It is also best for sensitive eyes, as it helps minimize squinting.
Fortunately, we were able to schedule the Barnett’s family session at the best light of the day. That soft, golden light is so flattering and brings richness to the photos. As the sun sets, those dusky blues with hints of purple and pink start to shine. This is the gift of a sunny, cloudless sky day.
Coastal Threads
The number one question clients ask me for family sessions is what to wear. Simple chic and comfort are the best choices for a summer session. It is usually hot and humid. Lighter colors and fabrics fare better for this season. The Barnetts opted for neutral tones, which pair nicely with the sandy hues and crashing waves.
Have Fun at Wild Dunes
For family portraits, I strive for a mix of traditional portraiture and playful, candid-like images. This provides families with perfect parent-pleaser photos while also capturing authentic moments in the other pictures. I’m so glad the Barnett Family could fit in a session with me, a Wild Dunes family photographer!
