As a Kiawah family photographer, one of my favorite places on the island to for a Kiawah family portrait is the Sanctuary Hotel. Around this five-star hotel is beautiful landscaping, lush nature, and easy access to the beach. This is a photographer’s dream. Why? Because we have a few backdrop options that can be used. This is a gift when family sessions last for thirty minutes to an hour.
My approach to Kiawah family portraits is a mix of posed and documentary style. I want each family to have timeless photos to hang on the wall, but I also want them to be an authentic reflection of their loved ones. I think the Kim family understood the assignment!
The Kims were staying at the Sanctuary Hotel and wanted to commemorate their vacation with family photos. Based on the time of day and lighting, I mapped out a route for their Kiawah family session. It was a brighter time a day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I chose spots where the light could be softened by the foliage around us. We saved the beach for last. This is because the sand can get everyone quite messy. But the sand also acts as a reflector. It bounces light back up. This means the beach is very bright. So, I save it for last to have the best light for that setting.
The Kim family were naturals. Their daughters also know how to strike a pose! I love seeing children express their unique personality for a family session. Whether it’s silly poses, vogue-esque fun, or playing on the beach. It enriches the photos when families are relaxed and can laugh together. There are so many sweet moments between the parents and their daughters, too.
Thank you to the Kim family for choosing me as their Kiawah family photographer.
